Einar Örn Hreinsson is a Data Scientist at the Icelandic Regional Development Institute, a state owned, independent research institution dedicated to cultivating and monitoring regional development across the country. Aimed at introducing government policy, it employs regional strategies and functions to strengthen rural settlements and to provide the Icelandic people with support and an increased standard of living through a broad range of policy and reform.

 

With over 12 years of professional experience, Einar has worked on a range of projects including spatial analysis and forecasting. He is responsible for making population projections for each municipality in Iceland and assessing the accessibility of residents to public services. Einar gathers data from various sources to ensure researchers have the tools and information they need, and presents his data and findings in accessible, clear reports and forecasts.

 

With an understanding of the important in having free and open software, Einar is driven by a passion for making information and data accessible and understandable to all. He holds a master’s degree in Geography in 2008 from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and a bachelor’s degree in Physics in 1999 from the University of Iceland where he studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign during his last semester. While studying in the US, he was a member of the Judo Club.

 

In the next few years, Einar would like to come out from behind the scenes to start networking with others in the field internationally, and to share his expertise on topics such as operational hydrological assimilation. He speaks English and Icelandic, and enjoys judo, hiking and travel outside of his professional endeavors.
